Queenslanders support the introduction of a Human Rights Act for Queensland

15-Apr-2016 The Queensland Government is currently giving Queenslanders the opportunity to have their say about a possible Human Rights Act.

Submissions to Queensland’s Human Rights Inquiry close on Monday 18 April.

The unfunded, volunteer-based campaign for a Human Rights Act for Queensland has provided the inquiry with close to 400 submissions from the public that express their views about a possible Human Rights Act. Approximately 95% of these submissions support the introduction of a Human Rights Act for Queensland.

The Campaign’s coordinator, Aimee McVeigh, says that these responses reflect the views of ordinary Queenslanders and they illustrate how our rights in Queensland are not adequately protected.

“People support the introduction of a Human Rights Act because they can see the value in protecting rights associated with freedom, respect, equality and dignity in law”, said Ms McVeigh.

“Stories coming from the community detail situations where human rights have not been considered – including in the child protection system, by the police in their dealings with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, the ineffective protection of property rights and issues related to homelessness.”

“Queenslanders have expressed their concerns about the potential for abuse of power by government, our experiences in Queensland of the excessive use of government power and the need for better legal protections of human rights”, said Ms McVeigh.

Alongside the submissions that the Campaign collected, a Change.org petition (https://www.change.org/p/annastacia-palaszczuk-support-bill-of-rights) has almost 30 000 supporters calling on Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk to implement a Human Rights Act.

“If the Queensland Government is truly outward looking and responsive the views of the community it will act on the community support for a Human Rights Act for Queensland,” said Ms McVeig
